Before you start

Clean after the furniture and boxes are out. Empty rooms let you reach every cabinet, closet and corner. Book your cleaners for moving day or the day after, and leave the electricity and water on until the cleaning is finished.

Kitchen

Inside and outside of every cabinet and drawer
Inside the fridge and freezer (unplug and dry it first)
Inside the oven, racks and stovetop, plus the range hood filter
Inside the dishwasher and microwave
Counters, backsplash, sink and faucet
Wipe light switches, outlets and the top of the fridge

Bathrooms

Toilet inside, outside and behind the base
Tub, shower walls, glass doors and grout
Vanity inside and out, sink and mirror
Exhaust fan cover and light fixtures
Floors, including corners behind the toilet

Bedrooms, closets & living areas

Closet shelves, rods and floors
Baseboards, door frames and doors
Window sills and tracks (Ottawa winters leave grit in them)
Light fixtures and ceiling fans
Vacuum carpets and wash hard floors last

Don't forget

Front entry and closet: salt stains and boot marks
Balcony or patio sweep
Laundry area: lint trap, washer gasket and behind the machines
Remove nails and hooks only if your lease says so
Take photos of each clean room for your records
