Stop the salt at the door
- Use two mats: a rough outdoor mat and an absorbent indoor one
- Add a boot tray so slush doesn't reach the floor
- Wipe white salt marks with warm water and a little white vinegar
- Wash indoor mats every week or two in peak season
Protect your floors
Salt is abrasive and leaves a film that dulls hardwood, vinyl and tile. Vacuum or sweep grit daily near entrances, then damp-mop with a pH-neutral cleaner. Avoid soaking hardwood: wring the mop well.
Carpets and rugs
- Vacuum high-traffic paths more often in winter
- Blot salt stains; don't scrub them deeper
- Move area rugs away from the door during the slushiest months
Windows, sills and condensation
Ottawa winters bring condensation on windows. Wipe sills and tracks regularly so moisture and dust don't turn into mildew, and keep bathroom fans running after showers.
Make winter easier
A recurring cleaning plan every one or two weeks keeps salt and grit under control all season. Frequency discounts mean the more often we come, the more you save.
